Ketheric Thorm is one of the most enigmatic characters in Baldur’s Gate 3, and also one of the main antagonists. Recent dev reveals showed that there were earlier plans to have Thorm as a companion, which has led many to wonder if he can be saved and given an alternate ending.
Is it Mandatory to Kill Ketheric Thorm in Baldur’s Gate 3? (BG3)
The very first encounter you have with Thorm shows his evilness and how he treats anyone who tries to defy him. Killing him yourself is certainly not the most evil thing to do, and you could indeed do so with your own hands.
You first encounter him at the Moonrise Towers, where you meet Thorm on the rooftop. There are several dialog options, and some also involve activity checks. The possible success with these checks will require you to get some high rolls, so be aware of that. There’s also a bonus chance to know more about Ketheric Thorm’s wife, Melodia.
The first stage ends when Thorm’s health falls to 50%, at which point, he escapes to the Mind Flayer Colony. This location is directly beneath the Moonrise Towers. Unlike stage one, there’s a possibility that you might not have to fight Thorm at all. It depends on a dialog option that opens up when you and Thorm are alone.
There are intimidation and persuasion checks that pop up during the dialog. A successful check means you don’t have to fight Thorm, but there’s a catch. Even if you don’t defeat and kill Thorm with your own hands, he will toss himself into the pit, ending his life. Hence, you don’t need to end his life yourself, but unfortunately, you can’t save him either.
If you manage to get the persuasion check done, the end of Act 2 depends on your fight with Myrkul. While Ketheric Thorm may have chosen not to fight you, his champion won’t give up so easily. Once you have defeated him, the next Act of Baldur’s Gate 3(BG3) will begin.
