Guardians might disagree on a lot of things (or even most things). But there is one place where we’re all united. Fishing is awesome. It’s easily the best part of the Season of the Deep, and it’s safe to say that I’m addicted. If you’re like me and desperate to get your hand on some golden fish, then here’s your guide on how to quickly and efficiently catch Exotic fish in Destiny 2.
How to Easily Catch Exotic Fish in Destiny 2
There are over two dozen new fish to catch and most of them are pretty easy to snag. Exotic fish, though? Another matter entirely. But it’s worth it to catch them. Not only do you get to add it to your tank, you’ll get a Triumph and an Exotic Armor upon turning it in. Others have stated that they’ve also received Ascendant Shards, but I haven’t been that lucky.
Here’s how to catch some Exotic fish for yourself. This is a succinct recipe, but I’ll go into detail below.
- Have at least 50 – 70 Bait.
- Go to the fishing hot zone.
- Go with friends or only fish at places that already have a lot of people.
- Only fish after a Public Event has completed.
- Always aim for Perfect Catch.
- Accept that RNG can be cruel or kind.
Now, let’s dive into the details. Community research has determined that the likelihood of catching an Exotic Fish is 1%. I caught my first Exotic Fish after 153 tries and others have stated that it took them up to 300 tries. It’s all down to RNG.
Fish in Groups to Improve Your Odds
I highly recommend bringing as much bait as possible, but 50 – 70 should be fine depending on how frequently a Public Event spawns. Once a Public Event occurs, all of your Focused Fishing progress will reset, which is why it’s important to only fish with friends or with a pond that has plenty of people at it. The more people, the better! If a pond has less than two people, fast travel to reset the map and check the pond again. Repeat as necessary to keep your bait use efficient.

The reason Focused Fishing is so integral is because the higher it is, the more likely you are to encounter Legendary or Exotic fish. Your Focused Fishing gauge does not need to be over two bars for an Exotic Fish to be caught, despite rumors to the contrary. I caught mine with only one filled bar. Each time you, or anyone near you, catches a Legendary or higher fish, you’ll get a boost to your Focused Fishing Gauge. That’s why getting a “Perfect Catch” is so important. While you can get a Legendary Fish with just a “Nice Catch” you are much more likely to get a Legendary or Exotic Fish with a Perfect Catch.
If you do each of these steps, you’ve drastically improved your chances of catching an Exotic Fish. And once you deposit it, you can see it floating in your tank!
