Helldivers 2 has begun to smooth out its server woes, so now’s as good a time as any to start grinding materials to upgrade your Destroyer. If you want more optimal Stratagems, you’re going to need some Samples; here’s how to get Rare Samples.
Where to Find Rare Samples in Helldivers 2
Rare Samples only begin appearing in missions that are “Challenging” difficulty and above. If you aren’t sure which samples will appear in a given mission, just check the bottom of the Galactic War map in the mission select screen, shown below:
This nifty UI element will highlight any samples that will appear during your mission. Once you’ve launched, check your map—the top right of the UI will tell you exactly how many of each sample are currently available on the battlefield.
What do Rare Samples Look Like in Helldivers 2?
Unlike Common Samples which take the form of regular crates, Rare Samples have 2 forms: Yellow Flowers and Pink-Colored Rocks.
Yellow Flowers can be found in the outskirts, away from the main area near rocky terrains. They do blend in with the area and are easily missed visually, however the Helldivers team took that into account. When near one of these flowers you will be given an Audio cue, to tell you a Yellow Flower is nearby.
Red-Colored Rocks, unlike Yellow Flowers, are found within the main objective area. They usually spawn within craters caused by dropship pods.
Of course, finding every sample within the time limit is impossible. But if you want to increase your chances of finding Rare Samples, check these sources:
- Outcroppings or plants near Hives or Automation Facilities.
- Downed supply pods or bunkers, marked with an orange beacon.
- Sealed supply crates, which are opened using an explosive.
Of course, these sources will also award Common samples, but you’ll need plenty of those regardless. You may also be lucky enough to find some premium currency in the form of Super Credits in one of these supply-laden areas.
You won’t be awarded Samples for completing a mission, so be sure you pick them up as you explore! Also, if you die, you’ll drop some of the Samples you’re carrying. If this happens, check the map for test-tube icons and listen out for a beeping sound to relocate them, or have an ally grab them for you.
