The Pokémon, known for its many patterns, is making a debut during the Winter Holiday event in Pokémon GO. For the first time, Trainers can begin catching Scatterbug, Spewpa, and Vivillon by using a brand-new collection system that utilizes postcards and medals.
Considering Vivillon is known for its many patterns based on regions and landscapes, it only made sense for Niantic to take advantage of that in the mobile game. Scatterbug, the first form of the Scale Pokémon, will only appear when using this new system. We’re here to explain how the postcards work and how you can get a Scatterbug for yourself.
Pokémon GO – How to Get Scatterbug, Spewpa, and Vivillon
To earn the Scale Pokémon, Trainers will need to use the friend and gift system within the game. Any time you send a gift or receive one, there is a postcard associated with it. These postcards are based on PokéStops you or one of your friends have spun. This is important because Scatterbug will be tied directly to these postcards and regions.

Each time you open a gift, you can pin the postcard. Once you’ve pinned the card, it’s added to that region’s progress which is tracked in a medal tied to Vivillon. The more postcards you pin from one region, the more chances you’ll get to encounter a Scatterbug from that region. That means international friends are more important than ever for getting Scatterbug, Spewpa, and Vivillon in Pokémon.
You’ll need 25 candies to evolve Scatterbug into Spewpa. Then another 100 candies are required to get a Vivillon. There are 18 different regions that the Scale Pokémon can represent, so that’s 18 different patterns that you can collect. That will require plenty of postcards, but it’s certainly possible, and the new system will remain in the game for the foreseeable future.
