Parrying is one of the most useful Special Moves in Tears of the Kingdom. I’ve unfortunately played around 20 hours of the game without knowing it even existed, so I feel it’s my duty to inform this lovely player-base! Without further ado, continue reading to learn how to parry in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom!
How to Parry in Tears of the Kingdom
To parry in TOTK, simply hold out your Shield by pressing LZ and press A when an enemy attack is about to land. Successfully parrying an enemy’s attack will leave them stunned for a few seconds, allowing you to deal as much damage as possible.
I’ve found that the best way to practice parrying in TOTK is to try it on the weaker enemies in the Great Sky Islands. Enemies like the Soldier Construct have very predictable attacks and do not deal too much damage. This makes them the perfect sparring partner!

When practicing parrying, it’s best to use a lower quality shield as to not break your more important ones! It’ll take time, but make sure to only parry at the very last second!
Stunning an enemy with parry will allow you to deal massive damage to them while they are recovering. You can also back up from the enemy and strike from a distance during this period.
How to Backflip in Tears of the Kingdom
If you have no shields to parry with, you can backflip to dodge your opponent’s attack by locking on to the enemy, backing up, and pressing X. If you time this correctly, you’ll be able to backflip over dangerous attacks.
While the parry is easier to perform and more reliable, the backflip should be able to save your life in a pinch.
Now that you know how to parry in Tears of the Kingdom, it’s time to get out there and stun some enemies!
