When you reach the end of the Gauntlet of Shar, you will meet the Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3 and be faced with a difficult decision. Your choice here will have massive consequences, so we tested out all possibilities for you to know the best way forward in BG3.
Should You Save or Kill the Nightsong in BG3?
The short answer is no, you should absolutely not kill the Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3 unless you want some pretty nasty consequences. Before getting into the differences, we can tell you that killing the Nightsong will cut off any chances of romance with Shadowheart, and the Shadow Curse will be worse than ever before. We recommend saving before making a definitive decision because there is no turning back without it.
What Happens if You Save the Nightsong in BG3?
If you kill Balthazar and stop Shadowheart from killing the Nightsong, the “good guys” in Baldur’s Gate 3 will have a massive boon. Ketheric now has an enemy in the reborn Nightsong with full power from Selune. Last Light Inn will also remain standing, and Shadowheart will go down a much lighter path in the story.
In terms of good consequences, this is precisely what you want, and you even get a moon glaive weapon for those of you who didn’t want to lose the Spear of the Night.
What Happens if You Kill the Nightsong in BG3?
When you kill the Nightsong with the Spear of Night on Shadowheart, she will have fulfilled her purpose with Shar and become her champion. She will then be tasked with taking down Ketheric and ushering in a new age of Shar within Baldur’s Gate 3. But that’s not even the bad part.
If Nightsong falls, then the Last Light Inn will lose its barrier. The Shadow Curse will decimate everyone inside, meaning any quests or NPCs from that area will be gone for good. This happened on our save before we knew the consequences, and it became one of the few times we reversed a choice.
How to Find the Gauntlet of Shar and Nightsong
The Gauntlet of Shar is hidden underneath the Thorm Mausoleum in the Shadow-Cursed Lands of BG3’s Act 2. The Mausoleum is to the north of Reithwin, just west of the Mason’s Guild. Once inside, you’ll have to solve a simple puzzle involving a few murals, and then a door will open up, allowing you to descend into the Gauntlet of Shar.
Inside the Gauntlet of Shar, you’ll need to collect a total of five Umbral Gems. Three of these will come for a series of Dark Justiciar challenges, one from a beleaguered demon, and one from an early room puzzle. When you’ve collected them all, you’ll be able to descend deep into the Gauntlet and meet with the Nightsong.
Keep in mind that progressing to the Nightsong will initiate a Point of No Return. After completing the Gauntlet of Shar, you’ll be fully cut off from the areas in Act 1. The game will let you know when this is about to happen, but to be safe, you’ll want to make sure you’ve tied up any and all loose ends before meeting up with Nightsong.
So now you know whether you should kill Nightsong or not, but before you move on to Thorm at Moonrise Towers, make sure you’ve first lifted the Shadow Curse in Baldur’s Gate 3.
