Shadowheart has to go back to where her journey began in Baldur’s Gate 3, and that means facing off against Viconia DeVir within the House of Grief. You must decide whether to kill Viconia or let her run off with her life intact in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to Start Viconia DeVir’s Questline.
Viconia DeVir’s questline is intrinsically tied with Shadowheart’s companion quest, Daughter of Darkness. As long as you recruit Shadowheart at some point, keep up with her quests, and stay on her good side, you’ll get to DeVir eventually. Viconia’s part of the Investigate the House of Grief and Surrender Shadowheart to Viconia quests. The latter of these quests take part in Act 3.
How to Get to the House of Grief and Viconia DeVir
You’ll find the House of Grief at the most northwestern part of the Lower City. You can reach it by crossing a small bridge that’s just on the outskirts of the city. The coordinates are X: -236 Y: -40.
Viconia DeVir will be under the House of Grief in a place called the Sharran Ruins. She resides in the Cloister of Sombre Embrace. After talking to Mirie the elf and demanding your entrance to the House of Grief, you’ll next need to let Shadowheart speak to the Inquirer of Grief. Make sure she’s in your party for this.
Once Shadowheart talks to her, you’ll be led to the entrance of the Cloister of Shar’s Embrace, where Viconia herself resides.
Should You Kill Viconia or Not in BG3?
The short answer is yes, you should kill Viconia DeVir in Baldur’s Gate 3. Not only does it destroy any loose ends that could come back to haunt Shadowheart, but you can even gain approval from party members such as Minsc. If you chose to fight Viconia, you already erased the chance of getting her as an ally, and her life is only a danger for your companion.
What Happens if You Kill Viconia DeVir?
Jaheira is the only party member who will disapprove of you killing Viconia DeVir in BG3. After all, Jaheira, Minsc, and Viconia are all returning characters. It only makes sense that they have their own reactions to the killing of an old friend. However, we didn’t play the older Baldur’s Gate games, and we have no attachment to the cold-hearted elf that ruined Shadowheart’s life.
What Happens if You Spare Viconia DeVir?
Sparing Viconia leads to some pretty drastic things happening. If you hand Shadowheart over to Viconia, you can gain her as an ally in the major battle against the Elder Brain. Of course, that means losing Shadowheart and ruining her life all over again, and most players likely won’t go down that road.
This is definitely the evil option. It will start the Surrender Shadowheart to Viconia questline as well. Don’t worry, you’ll be given a heads-up before getting to decide. You’ll have to head back to camp anyway and tell Shadowheart what Viconia wants. Next, Shadowheart will come with you to confront her. You’ll get two dialogue options: “She’s all yours” or “Never.” If you choose the first, you’ll never be able to interact or see Shadowheart ever again.
For roleplay purposes, there really is no way to justify keeping Viconia alive. But at the end of the day, it all depends on the kind of character you want to play. Compared to other choices, killing Viconia or keeping her alive won’t ruin the main story in Baldur’s Gate 3.
