After meeting the mysterious devil, Raphael, in Baldur’s Gate 3, he purposely leaves you with some offers that are difficult to refuse. Should you kill Yurgir or betray Raphael by helping him in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Baldur’s Gate 3 – Should You Side With Raphael or Yurgir?
If you want to improve your relationship with Asterion, siding with Raphael and defeating Yurgir is your best option. However, sparing Yurgir and helping him break the contract will grant you him as a powerful ally during battle, allowing you to turn the tides if you’re up against strong enemies.
In short, you have three options you can go for, depending on the outcome you want.
If you’re looking to find the quests Kill Raphael’s Old Enemy and Break Yurgir’s Contract, they both take place in the Shadow Cursed Lands. These are part of the quest The Pale Elf and will unlock naturally as you continue to help Astarion.
Killing Yurgir and His Army of Minions in Battle
Defeating Yurgir in battle requires careful coordination and a lot of power from your party, as you’ll be up against numerous minions alongside him as the main boss. You can use AoE spells, such as the Glyph of Warding, to attack Yurgir with damage he can’t avoid. Positioning is going to be key in this fight as well. You can also use Karlach to hurl bombs at him. Try to get Yurgir and his followers to ground level.
Persuading Him to Defeat Himself
This is by far the easiest way to defeat Yurgir. You’ll need to pass a series of persuasion checks to convince him to kill himself. Here’s the most reliable dialogue tree:
- “Put that thing down. I’m here to talk.”
- “Wait – you know Raphael?”
- “He wants you dead.”
- “Let’s share our experiences about Raphael. Perhaps we can help each other.”
- “Show me this contract. Perhaps there’s something you missed.”
After that, you’ll need to pass a second set of dialogue checks:
- “Your contract is a song?”
- [PERSUSASION] The lyrics are a trick. You’ve always had an audience – your followers. Get rid of them.
- [PERSUSASION] You’re not finished yet – the displacer can hear you, can’t she? Kill her.
- [PERSUSASION] Exactly. Kill yourself, complete the contract, and you’ll be reborn in Avernus. Free.
Once that is done, he and his followers will kill themselves.
Breaking Yurgir’s Contract by Defeating Every Enemy in the Area
This one is going to be difficult, but doable. You’ll first need to read a book called “one becomes many,” which will tell you to “speak Itori Mustag thrice.” You can find this book at a broken effigy in the Gauntlet of Shar. The coordinates for it are X:-709, and Y:-723.
After this, you’ll need to interact with the broken effigy on the ground, which will spawn a rat. This will then spawn waves of rats, and you will need to defeat all of them to break the contract. There are many, many rats, so be warned. Be sure to take advantage of spirit guardians during this fight.
If you aim to strengthen your numbers in battle, the third choice may be best for you. Otherwise, if you have a powerful party or strong persuasion skills, you can swiftly take out Yurgir, satisfying your deal with Raphael and obtaining the information Asterion wants.
