Breeding for new, more powerful creatures is one of the most beloved features in Pokemon games, so any game slightly inspired by it would have to address that matter in one way or another. Is Palworld doing so during its initial Early Access release?
Is There Breeding in Palworld?
Players can freely breed their Pals in Palworld. Breeding works not only as a way to get more of your favorite creatures, but also to make new Pals that can inherit their parent’s characteristics and strengths. And some special types of Pal may only be obtained through this method.
Some different species of Pals can be paired together to produce a special fusion variant of the two Pals. During these fusions, the new resulting Pal would inherit a specific parent’s base model but with a new elemental type, resulting in unique colors and textures, not too dissimilar to Pokemon’s regional variants.
It’s important to note that not all Pals have their own fusion variants. Most Pals that a player breeds will produce eggs that result in a Pal completely unrelated to its parents. It seems that breeding usually creates an offspring with the closest average strength matching the two Pals being bred. For example, pairing an Eikthyrdeer with a Dumud results in a Mozzarina. This makes for some pretty surprising results, but you can use a Palworld breeding calculator online to help you figure out which Pal you’ll end up with before wasting the time and resources on getting a low-level Pal you don’t want or need.
How to Start Breeding in Palworld
Breeding in Palwolrd is a rather complex process, not because the miracle of birth is complex but rather because baking a cake is complex. Allow me to explain.
In order to start breeding in Palworld, you’ll need the following items:
- A Breeding Farm: Unlocks a level 19. You’ll need 100 Wood, 200 Stone, and 50 Fiber to build it.
- A Cake: You’ll need to bake a cake from scratch, using a Cooking Pot and its required ingredients.
- Two compatible Pals: You’ll need to assign a male Pal and female Pal to the Breeding Farm to produce eggs.
- An Egg Incubator: You’ll need the Egg Incubator to hatch the egg the results from the breeding process. The Incubator unlocks at level 7 with Ancient Technology Points and building one requires 10 Paldium Fragments, 5 Cloth, 30 Stone, and 2 Ancient Civilization Parts.
- Time and patience: It’ll take around roughly 15 to 20 minutes for your Pals to breed, not to mention the time it takes to make a cake beforehand and the time it takes to incubate the resulting egg.
Most of the above is relatively simple and easy to set up. But baking a cake is, for some reason, one of the most involved activities you can do in Palworld. To bake a cake in Palworld, you’ll need to
- Unlock and build a Cooking Pot: You can unlock a Cooking Pot at level 17. Building one requires 20 Wood, 15 Ingots, and 3 Flame Organs.
- Collect the following ingredients:
- 5 Flour: to get Flour, you’ll need to
- Unlock and set up a Wheat Plantation: You’ll need to farm Wheat using Wheat Seeds to turn the Wheat into Flour.
- Unlock and set up a Mill: Use the Mill to turn 3 Wheat into 1 Flour.
- 8 Red Berries: You can farm Red Berries using a Berry Plantation or gather them from berry bushes throughout the world.
- 7 Milk: Unlock and build a ranch, then assign a Mozzarina to the ranch and collect its milk.
- 8 Eggs: Assign a Chikipi to the ranch and collect its eggs.
- 2 Honey: You can collect Honey from defeating certain Pals like Cinnamoth or assign a Pal like Beegarde to the ranch and collect the honey it produces.
- 5 Flour: to get Flour, you’ll need to
- Cook the ingredients in the Cooking Pot: Cooking a cake in Palworld will take only slightly less time than it takes to make a cake in the real world, but you can assign a Pal with the Kindling work skill to take over so that you don’t have to hold down a single button for nearly 15 minutes.
Once you have your cake, you can then place the cake in the Breeding Farm to get your Pals in the mood and watch the magic happen. You’ll just want to keep in mind that the cake and all its required ingredients are perishable, and you’ll only have a set amount of time before they disappear from your inventory. To help manage your ingredients, you’ll likely want to build yourself a Cooler Box, which should help slow the time it takes for food to spoil.
