Snake is coming back! To the amazement of many fans of the Metal Gear Solid series during the PlayStation Showcase event in May 2023, Konami finally revealed its plans for the revival of this legendary franchise.
In addition to the reveal of the Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater remake (Metal Gear Solid Delta, as it is known now), as a special bonus, there was also an announcement for the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection – a compilation of remasters of classic MGS games. Although the promotional image only shows three games, this compilation actually comes with five! Let’s check out everything included in Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1.

So, what titles are confirmed for the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1? Here is the complete list of all the games announced so far:

- Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX2, 1990)

Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater are based on their remastered versions from the HD collection released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2011 – but they will probably get a little extra polish, and trophy/achievement support is already there. It’s also worth mentioning that Metal Gear Solid comes with VR missions (not really for playing in VR) and that this collection includes the original version of Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater – which is a bit of a strange move right before the release of the remake.
As for the classics – Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, it is not known how these two MSX2/NES retro titles will be handled, i.e. which versions will be included in the collection and how many, if any, changes and updates they will receive. Considering how detailed Konami has approached its recent retro collections, for vintage Castlevania and TMNT games, we have no doubt that these classics will also get solid versions (heh) with many additional filters and quality-of-life improvements. I really hope that “I FEEL ASLEEP!!” stays in.

What Games Could Be in Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.2?
Although it has not been officially announced yet, Vol.2 of this compilation is already the talk of the town among MGS fans. It is also obvious that KONAMI has plans to release more parts of this compilation after naming this one Vol.1 which was enough to spark the imagination of hardcore fans who are already making wishlists of all the other Metal Gear games they would like to see re-released in the future for modern consoles – so here is mine!
Vol 2. would have to have Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, a game that originates from the PSP and also had a good remaster on the PS3/X360 generation, very important for connecting the story from the third part with the rest of the series. It wouldn’t be bad to see other lesser-known PSP MGS games like Portable Ops and MGS Acid titles, but definitely, the main thing that the Vol 2. collection could have would be Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots from 2008, which until now it has not received a single remaster or reissue, nor is it playable without a PlayStation 3. So please, Konami, do something about it already!
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1 is releasing “this autumn” (no date set yet) for “the latest platforms” (all systems not confirmed yet, but PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles seem like a sure thing. Wouldn’t mind a Switch version too). Konami has set up the official website for this collection, so check it out for all possible updates.
